Stabilize

a poem by C.A. Craig

A tapping of color

blinks on the lids

of my unopened eyes.

It follows the pulse

my perceived pulse

powered by the functional heart.

I don’t understand

the association

of my heart with my feelings.

When I feel the heat

growing in my anxious chest

is that perception, is it illusion?

Maybe my lungs are struggling.

So, I’ll breathe

and watch the pulsating colors.

I see you heart. Stabilize.

The answer you are waiting for

will not stop your beating.
